Course intent
.Using natural forms as a starting point, you will first interpret the shapes using mixed media to create a collage, which can include additional sketches, rubbings and three dimensional elements. The collage will become a starting point for your stitched piece, where you will add a variety of papers and materials onto a fabric background to create textural effects. You will learn to stitch intuitively, by combining a variety of threads and using simple mark making stitches (straight, running stitch, seeding and others), while playing with stitch size, density, positioning and overlapping. Rather than creating a beautiful piece of embroidery, the class aims to explore unconventional materials with stitch – there is no right or wrong method, only a range of possibilities!
What will I learn?
.You will learn how to stitch on to paper and plastic using mark making stitches: -
- Collage techniques.
- Basic design principles and colour theory.
- Stitching on to paper and plastic, and exploring their different qualities.
- Marking making stitches, including straight stitches, seeding and detached chain.
- Explore how other artists combine mixed media with textiles.
By the end of the session, you will be able to combine stitch with mixed media, while also understanding the constraints and possibilities of the medium. You will either have a range of small collages and stitched samples, or be working on a larger piece, with clear a clear idea on how to complete the project.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
