Calligraphy - Celebrating Spring - Beginners & Improvers Workshop

Course intent

Springtime is an inspirational time with fresh colours appearing in new buds and flowers. This workshop will incorporate learning calligraphy while celebrating the new season by using colour to create some lovely writing that can be used as a quotation or for cards.

What will I learn?

You will learn to:

• write using a broad edged pen, starting with the alphabet
• rule up
• do simple layouts
• use colour
• use medieval techniques for decorating your writing in the fresh colours of spring

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for beginners and improvers. There will be different levels according to how much experience you have. If you have any queries or if you write with your left hand, as you will need different nibs, please contact the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

• a hard pencil (2H or similar), an HB pencil
• a biro, a pencil sharpener and a rubber
• a ruler
• scissors
• an A3 sketch or layout pad
• old or dark clothes
• reading glasses if you use them

If you have any of the following, please bring them with you: masking tape, a fine paintbrush, watercolours and any calligraphy materials you may have.

Paper, inks, paint and pens will be supplied.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can join longer calligraphy courses to develop your skills and other short workshops with SAL. Your tutor can advise you about further courses of study and about attending local calligraphy groups.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
