Acrylic painting - Spring Flower Workshop

Course intent

Develop your drawing and painting skills to create an acrylic painting of beautiful Spring Flowers. We will focus on techniques, composition and on colour mixing and how to use colour to good effect.

What will I learn?

You will learn

  • how to work from photographs of Spring Flower(s) or work from life with real flowers
  • composition: how to make your painting more interesting to look at
  • colour mixing and which colours work well together
  • measuring and proportion
  • explore various painting techniques such as blending etc...
  • how to paint texture and other brush techniques

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is aimed at those who have completed a beginner’s drawing workshop or longer course and who have completed another painting in acrylics workshop rather than at complete beginners. To join this course you will need to know:

  • how to start a drawing
  • how to draw basic shapes with confidence
  • how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours

If you are unsure about your level, please contact the tutor by emailing adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • a set of acrylic paints with as many basic colours as possible including white. Bring colours that will be helpful for painting your chosen flower(s) such as red, blue, green, yellow, pink, purple for example.
  • acrylic paper (suggested size A4 or A3 if you like to work on a larger scale) or a board or canvas.
  • An A4 sketch book with cartridge paper or individual sheets of paper to draw on
  • Synthetic Acrylic brushes, a small selection or set of round, filbert and flat brushes. Please contact Amanda.buchan@surreycc.gov.uk for advice
  • Pencils (2B or 3B)
  • an eraser
  • a sharpener
  • low tack masking tape if working on paper
  • a palette
  • a water jar
  • photograph/s or real Spring flower(s) that you wish to paint - Just one, two or a few flowers will be enough
  • wear old clothes or a cover such as an apron or smock as acrylic paint can stain clothes.

The Tutor will provide some images to provide you with choice.

What can I do when I finish the course?
