Pottery & Claywork - Moon Jar on the Potter’s Wheel – Improvers & Advanced Workshop

Course intent

A throwing workshop designed for Improvers to Advanced level who will learn the skill and

knowledge of making a Korean Moon Jar using 2kgs of clay on an electric potter’s wheel.

What will I learn?

As a starting point, you should be confident in your ability to wedge, centre and pull a

straight 9-10inch straight (5inch inside base) cylinder using 2kgs of clay. Initially you will

practice and warm up making a few tall, even walled cylinders with 2 kgs of clay. This will be

a learning exercise. You will then proceed to learn making the Korean Moon jar shape on the

potter’s wheel. One Moon Jar per learner will be bisque fired, should you want to keep it

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This is a throwing workshop meant for Improvers to Advanced level learners only who are

fairly confident with their throwing skills and want to learn making a Moon Jar shape on an

electric Potters wheel. As a starting point, you should be confident in your ability to wedge,

centre and pull a straight 9-10inch straight (5inch inside base) cylinder using 2kgs of clay.

One Moon jar per learner will be bisque fired, should you want to keep it.

There are 2 left handed wheels at the Guildford centre. Hence, we can accommodate only 2

learners who will need those wheels for this workshop. Please do mention while taking

admission so we don’t over book for the left handed wheels.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Sensible closed-toe shoes (not sandals, heels or flip flops) § Apron & suitable clothes for a pottery studio § Notebook and pen § Long hair must be tied back for certain processes § Nails should be clipped as long nails damage your work

Basic materials/technician costs are included.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You may enrol in a glazing workshop at a later date to glaze the bisque fired Moon jar. Please

check the SAL website to find the course details.

You can progress within advanced pottery courses with SAL and there are also other one-day

workshops available for specific subjects.

Additional information

A note about the Guildford site: There are steps leading to and inside the Guildford pottery studio so if you have mobility concerns you may find it easier to travel to Woking, Camberley or Farnham where there is better access. If you use a left handed wheel, please let us know. There are 2 left handed wheels at the Guildford centre and hence, we can accommodate only 2 learners who will need those wheels for this workshop. Please do mention while taking admission so we don’t over book for the left handed wheels. You will have a 30 minutes lunch break. We suggest you bring a lunch along as the SAL café is closed on a Saturday. There are shops/cafés and restaurants at a walking distance but please do check on Google maps before-hand to save time. We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
