Course intent
Do you want to speak to family and friends in another language? Perhaps you are going on holiday and want to be able to order in a restaurant? Or maybe you just fancy a new challenge?
Whatever your motivation for learning a language, our beginners’ courses are an ideal starting point that will teach you simple, practical language to help you handle real-life situations.
Our intensive courses are ideal if you want to progress quickly as they run for fewer weeks with more hours each week.
What will I learn?
Our beginners’ language courses are designed to get you speaking the language from day one. You will also have the chance to practise your listening, reading and writing skills, and learn some essential grammar.
There are six modules in the course, each one building on the last. In this sixth and final module, you will cover topics such as:
- planning a future holiday
- arranging to meet with friends
- making telephone calls
Our experienced tutors will tailor the course to ensure that every learner reaches their own language-learning goals. They may also give you additional tasks to complete outside of the lesson to help you make the most of your course.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is aimed at those who are confident holding basic conversations, can easily handle basic tourist transactions and have a good grasp of both present and past tenses. You should have completed approximately 75 hours of learning, for example following our Beginners – Module 5 course.
If you have studied the language for two years or more, you may find a Beyond Beginners course more suitable. You can also complete our self-assessment (available in the Languages section of the Surrey Adult Learning website) to find the best level for you.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
We recommend bringing paper and pen to every lesson so you can make notes.
Your tutor will also advise you of any required course books, which typically cost £15-30. They will also be able to recommend other optional resources that you may find useful for your learning.
This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom. To fully participate in this course, you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer / laptop / tablet with a fully updated browser, microphone and webcam.
- If you struggle to read printed text on a screen and you want to print resources, you will need access to a printer.
Once enrolled, you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online.
What can I do when I finish the course?
The beginners course runs over six modules and two years. When you have finished one module, you will be ready to move on to the next.
After completing all six modules, you will have achieved A1 Beginner level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. You can then move on to one of our Beyond Beginners courses, which correspond to the CEFR A2 Elementary level.
