Calligraphy - Improvers

Course intent

The aim of this course is to guide learners to study and develop their calligraphy skills and to use these in some self-directed projects over the term. We will explore the ancient origins of a script and develop it into our modern-day alphabet and use it with either ancient or more modern decoration.

What will I learn?

You will learn

  • develop skills in different scripts each term
  • explore the script and its characteristics
  • how to write the script
  • experiment with layout, design and colour
  • related decorative techniques
  • how to to produce your own projects

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for learners with some experience in calligraphy. Learners should be able to rule a page of lines using the x-height (pen made measurement of a square cut nib) and be able to assemble and use a dip pen with a nib and reservoir. If you can plan a cut and paste layout it is an advantage but not essential. If you have any queries about your level or about the course, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Pens, ink, paint and some good paper for your projects will be supplied.

You need to bring:

  • A sketchbook or notepad and biro
  • Two pencils – an HB and a harder 2H for example
  • A ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener
  • An A3 sketch or layout pad
  • Any favourite short quotations
  • Any calligraphy, or watercolours painting materials you may have
  • Old clothes or an apron
  • Reading glasses if you use them
  • What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can join further calligraphy or art courses with SAL and attend other one day workshops to learn different style of writing. Your tutor is happy to signpost you to other courses of study with local and national calligraphy societies and with other providers.
