Course intent
The opportunity to learn patchwork, quilting and appliqué skills will be provided through instruction and hands-on experience, enabling the development of interesting and creative quilts and projects, using a variety of techniques and designs. Working at an individual pace, beginners and improving learners will have the opportunity to learn, develop, refine and broaden their patchwork, quilting and appliqué knowledge and skills, whilst working on a quilt or other project [agreed with the tutor].
What will I learn?
.Teaching and learning will focus on:
- Fabric basics and preparation
- Quilt design and colour
- Cutting using a rotary cutter, mat and quilting ruler
- Joining fabric shapes. A variety of patchwork block patterns will be offered.
- Using a sewing machine
- Pressing
- A Quilt as You Go [QAYG] method of quilt construction to make a quilt
- Edge finishing
Note: projects may take longer than one course to complete.
o There will be chances to share quilting experiences on a regular basis.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
.o This course welcomes beginners and improvers. This course can be studied in isolation or considered as a path into a much larger subject area that makes for a creative and mindful hobby, with further courses offered throughout the year
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
.What do I need to bring :
- fabrics and threads to complete your individual projects and will need your own basic sewing equipment, eg pins, needles, scissors etc
- a notepad, pen and pencil
- Additional fabrics for testing and trailing techniques and machine stitches
Rotary cutting equipment and sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course.
A ‘needs list’ will be sent out prior to the start of the course which will include possible sources of fabrics.
What can I do when I finish the course?
Patchwork, quilting and appliqué courses will be offered throughout the year by Surrey Adult Learning to develop creativity and skills in this subject area. Occasional Saturday classes and other Needlecraft classes will also be offered.
