Oil Painting - Beginners & Improvers

Course intent

Learn the skills and techniques of oil painting. Experiment with a variety of subject matter and ways of working so that you find your own personal style in your painting.

What will I learn?

You will learn and practice: ● Mixing colours with confidence ● How to build up an oil painting in layers, or using the ‘alla prima’ technique ● Controlled brushwork, including how to accurately place and blend marks ● Transferring an image accurately onto a painting surface ● How to create and light an effective composition

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for beginners to oil painting as well as for those who have painted in oils before but would like further guidance and tuition. Whilst drawing skills are beneficial, your tutor will teach methods to simplify this element for those who are less confident.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

YOU NEED TO BRING: ● An apron, suitable clothing ● Notebook and pencil ● A set of oil paint to include the colours: Titanium White, Ivory Black, French Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow (please avoid traditional cadmium pigments). Suggested set: https://www.cassart.co.uk/daler-rowney-georgian-oil-introduction-22ml-set-of-10--c/ ● A small assortment of long-handled flat and round brushes. For example: Daler Rowney Graduate Brush Synthetic Long Handle Set of 5 | Cass Art ● A palette - a flat surface (preferably without dipped sections) that measures around 20 x 30cm minimum. Buy from Amazon for about £5, or make your own with, for example, an old picture frame, or piece of Perspex. ● A3 pad of oil painting paper ● Kitchen roll/ old cotton rags ● A clean, empty, leak-proof glass jar with a lid to store and transport solvent in. ● A zip lock bag or airtight container to transport used rags ● Zest-it® Citrus Free Solvent* or other non-toxic, non-flammable alternative (NOT turpentine or white spirits.) ● Masking tape ● Palette knife such as https://www.cassart.co.uk/rgm-professional-palette-knife---rgm-x-043--c/

Your tutor will advise on further materials specific to individual projects.

What can I do when I finish the course?

There are many opportunities to progress by taking up other art & craft classes, including further oil painting classes in the spring term. Saturday workshops can also provide progression if you want more practise and experience of drawing and painting from observation, with Saturdays including Life & Portrait, Acrylic Painting & other Drawing & Painting courses
