Course intent

The Beginner's Guide to Microsoft Excel is a 10-session course that covers the essential skills required to effectively use Excel. You will learn how to navigate, create, edit, and analyse data using Excel. The course covers various topics such as ribbon menus, Microsoft Office backstage view, spreadsheet navigation, formatting cells and worksheets, using formulas and functions, sorting and filtering data, addressing cells, inserting images, and creating charts and graphs. By the end of the course, you will have gained experience in these areas.

If you use/have used a different spreadsheet programme, the skills learned here are easily transferrable.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • Navigate and use Excel's ribbon menus and Microsoft Office backstage view.
  • Understand and navigate a spreadsheet layout.
  • Create, edit, save, and print workbooks using Excel.
  • Format cells and worksheets to enhance data presentation and readability.
  • Apply simple formulas and basic functions.
  • Sort and filter data efficiently to extract relevant information.
  • Insert images into workbooks to enhance visual appeal and data representation.
  • Create, format, and customise charts and graphs to visually represent data.
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

    This beginner’s course is for

    • Anyone with good computer, mouse and keyboard skills
    • If you are completely new to computers, please look at our Digital Skills & Confidence courses

    To fully participate in this course, you will need:

    • An email address
    • A reliable internet connection
    • A computer/laptop /tablet with a fully updated browser,
    • microphone and webcam.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    To fully participate in this course, you will need:

    • Access to a computer/laptop/tablet with a reliable internet connection
    • A working microphone, and webcam

    If you struggle to read printed text on a screen, you may find it beneficial to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources.
