Course intent
Explore the world of carpentry in a fully equipped workshop. Learn the basics of accurate and effective carpentry. You will complete 3 set projects focusing on basic carpentry techniques, with a final project of a planter, garden obelisk or bar stool which will incorporate your newly acquired skills.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- How to use the workshop power tools safely
- The importance of health and safety
- Essential maintenance of tools and machinery
- About the types of joints/fixings and what they are used for
- How to measure, mark out and cut accurately
- How to plan out work – dimensioning, estimating, tracking down errors, sketching and making diagrams of proposed work
- Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
- The importance of a clean and tidy workshop
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is aimed at beginners with a basic understanding of woodwork, wishing to expand on their knowledge.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- A sketchbook and pen
- An apron and closed toe shoes

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another course. There are other courses available with SAL including one-day workshops.
