Woodwork - Beginners & Improvers

Course intent

Discover the craft of woodwork in a fully equipped workshop. You will explore joints, materials, and the safe use of tools while being inspired by the contemporary and historical context of each technique covered. The course is project based with full support from a specialist tutor. Returning learners are welcome to work on individual projects.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Use the workshop power tools safely
  • The importance of health and safety
  • Essential maintenance of tools and machinery
  • How to mark and cut-out joints
  • How to design and work towards an original project
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • The importance of a clean and tidy workshop

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is aimed at beginners and improvers with a basic understanding of woodwork, wishing to expand on their knowledge.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • A sketchbook and pen
  • An apron and closed toe shoes

Your tutor will discuss your specific woodwork requirements in the first session.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another course. There are other courses available with SAL including one-day workshops.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
