Watercolour Painting - All Abilities (Online)

Course intent

This Online course will enable you to explore and further develop your skills in the use and application of watercolour. Working closely with techniques using sketchbook, photographs, found images or direct observation while covering a wide variety of subject matters. The projects given will build on past learning, week by week, to develop new abilities and will be summarised with a final personal project at the end of the course.

What will I learn?

You will:

  • Learn how to use materials and equipment
  • Learn new techniques and processes
  • Work with photos and your own sketches
  • Gain confidence in combining watercolour with other mediums (pen/ink/gouache and/or colouring pencils)
  • Be encouraged to take part in group discussions
  • Share your work in progress and finalised project
  • Have access to one-to-one support
  • Review and evaluate group work
  • Develop personal expression through a mixture of practice, discussion, and demonstration of techniques
  • Explore other artists work and approaches
  • Gain an understanding of copyright when working from photos etc.

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is for all abilities. Although, those with some experience of painting would be an advantage. Useful for those who need a refresher as well as those with experience, who wish to develop their own style.

This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom.

To fully participate in this course, you will need:

  • An email address
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer/laptop /tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and webcam.

Once enrolled on this course you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online.

You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.

This course will be using ZOOM for Education.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

  • A notepad and pen
  • An A3 watercolour pad (300 gsm – smooth and rough)
  • Sketch pad/book
  • Pencils 2H, HB, 2B, 4
  • A rubber and sharpener
  • A set of watercolour paints (tubes and/or pans)
  • A set of watercolour brushes: small and larger round and flat brushes
  • White permanent Gouache (Winsor Newton)
  • A watercolour palette for mixing paint.
  • Masking tape
  • Small natural sponge
  • Toothbrush
  • Clingfilm and tissue
  • 2 jars for water

For the Zoom lesson: you will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet with a reliable internet connection, working microphone, and webcam. If you struggle to read printed text on a screen, you may find it beneficial to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources.
