Course intent
You will learn the basics of manual bookkeeping rather than computerised methods. The course will take you through all the steps required to produce a Trial Balance. Bookkeeping involves tracking a business's financial transactions and events by recording all operations.
What will I learn?
.You will:
- Understand the various documents used in bookkeeping e.g. invoices, statements.
- Learn how to calculate trade and cash discounts
- Record and check invoices and how to transfer to the daybooks and ledgers.
- Record payments and receipts into a Cashbook and the double entry system
- Record petty cash payments and the look at the imprest system.
- Reconcile bank statements.
- Balance accounts and produce a Trial Balance.
- Have an introduction to VAT
- Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

.This course is for
- Absolute beginners with no prior bookkeeping experience but you must have basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Anyone interested in learning bookkeeping for personal or career development
- Anyone with a willingness to learn and study.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
.Please bring pens, pencils, eraser, ruler notepad/paper and calculator (basic).
Textbook – to be advised if required.

.In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another Surrey Adult learning course, such as:
