Family Learning - Understanding What is Taught in Secondary School for ESOL Parents

Course intent

You will develop your skills and knowledge in how school education works in England and gain practical ideas with reading and phonics to try with your child. This will be positive for your family wellbeing

What will I learn?

On this FREE online five-week course (2-hour sessions), you will work with the tutor and other parents and carers to learn about primary education in England and how to support your children’s learning. You will:

• develop digital skills by using Zoom and Google Classroom
• understand British values and how they are shared with children in school
• learn how to support your child with bilingualism
• learn about the school system in England
• find out about the curriculum and assessments
• find out how to help your child with reading
• learn about phonics
• practise your own English skills

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

If you are new to the UK or went to school in another country and are a parent/carer of a child aged 4-11, this course will help you understand how the school system works in England and how to help your child with English. This will be delivered online via Zoom

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

What do I need to bring :

• Have my camera on
• Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
• Please attend all sessions
• A reliable internet connection
• A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
• A pen and paper
• Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
• Fill out `Tell us what you think` form

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of this course, we will give you details of what you can move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, such as ESOL, or join a college or get a job

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
