Course intent
If you are new to the UK, went to school in Hong Kong and are a parent/carer of a child aged 7-11 this course will help you understand how English grammar and Maths is taught to your child.
What will you learn?
On this FREE online four-week course - 2-hour session, you will work with the tutor and other parents and carers to understand school education and how English and Math is taught in school. If your child is aged 7-11 years and you speak English as an additional language (EAL) this course is for you.
- Find out about British values
- Practise word and sentence level grammar
- Learn about how maths is taught
- Learn ways to practise spelling and punctuation
- Understand special celebration days in different cultures.

Is this course for you?
.This is delivered online via Zoom This course is taught in English and will be right for you if you're aged 18 or over and your English language speaking level is intermediate or advanced. Before booking for your place, please use our English Self-Assessment Form to check your level.
If you are already attending one of our English for Hongkongers BN(O) courses, please make sure that this course is at a different time to your English course.
Please only enrol yourself. Please do not enrol on behalf of anyone else.

What do you need to do?
You will need to:
- Have your camera on
- Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
- Please attend all sessions
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
- A pen and paper
- Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
- Fill out the `Getting to know you` form and fill out `Tell us what you think` form
- Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions
What could you do next?
At the end of this course, we will give you details of what you can move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, such as ESOL, or join a college or get a job

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
