Course intent
In this course you will become familiar with the art of calligraphy using historical manuscripts to study the alphabets and writing with a broad-edged dip pen. Those with some experience will concentrate on exploring more complex layouts together with a new script if appropriate. You will be encouraged to create your own personal projects.
What will I learn?
You will
- Beginners:
- Uncial Script – just one alphabet, well suited to beginners. A lovely open and flowing alphabet with no separate upper and lower case. We will study this script for the first half of term and follow on with:
- Gothic Script – a classic black letter alphabet – and again another script that is simple to pick up for the second half of this term.
Improvers (if the above scripts have been studied)
- explore a new script
- experiment with layout, weight and variations of lettering
- colour, design and layout
- related decorative techniques
