Sculpture - Beginners

Course intent

Learn how to sculpt from the very beginning. This course will give you a firm foundation of skills and techniques, to enable you to create your own sculptural pieces with confidence, in a friendly creative learning environment.

What will I learn?

You will learn

  • How to turn sketches and ideas into a finished sculptural piece.
  • How to model with clay
  • How to make an armature support from wire to use for clay sculpting
  • Proportion, measuring, enlarging/reducing

The tutor will give one-to-one support, there will be regular group discussion on work and progress, along with tutor demonstration of techniques

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Beginners in sculpture. You may have some experience in art, modelmaking, pottery etc and want to learn more about how to sculpt using clay.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please b• Sketchbook, notebook, pencil or pen.

Please wear;

  • Clothes for messy work and an oversized shirt or apron.
  • Sensible closed toe shoes

Most consumable materials, such as clay are included in the course fees.

You will be advised of any further basic personal protection, such as gloves, eyewear, materials and tools by the tutor during the course.

Sculptures that require firing are limited to 25cm high.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress onto the ‘all abilities’ course to widen your knowledge and experience with other techniques, media and materials, to develop the breadth of skills that sculpture can bring.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
