Sculpture - All Abilities

Course intent

Learn the principal sculpture techniques, develop a 3-dimensional understanding using clay and gain the confidence and skills to realise finished sculptures.

What will I learn?

You will learn

  • How to turn ideas from sketches into finished sculptural pieces.
  • How to model with clay
  • How to make a wire armature support for clay sculpting
  • How to check proportion, measure, enlarge or reduce.
  • Depending on time, progress and level, you may develop carving skills.
  • The tutor will provide one-to-one support along with regular discussions on work in progress, with demonstrations of techniques.
  • Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is for beginners as an introduction to the art of sculpture, giving support for those first steps towards building 3 dimensional sculptural forms.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    Please bring;

    • Sketchbook/notepad and pen or pencil
    • Returning learners and improvers – bring photos of what you would like to sculpt showing all angles. For example an animal or person.
    • Your own tools if you have them

    Please wear;

    • Clothes for messy work, with an oversized shirt or apron
    • Sensible closed toes shoes

    Most consumables, such as clay, armature wire and plaster are included in the course fees.

    You will be advised of the need for any further personal equipment (e.g. gloves and protective eye wear, used during carving) other materials and relevant tools by the tutor during the course.

    You will also be expected to purchase more expensive materials if you wish to use these.

    Sculptures that require firing are limited to a height/size restriction of 25cm3.

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    You can continue to develop your sculpture skills by progressing onto the next term of this course. You can also continue with the ‘Sculpture with Life Model’ course. Also on offer are Saturday Sculpture workshops
