Sewing for Home - All Abilities

Course intent

Learn some of the sewing and design skills needed to make beautiful and coordinated soft furnishings for your home on this inspiring, 5 week course. A simple cushion can be embellished with buttons, zips, piping and bias binding, or you could learn how to sew simple curtain headings or recover a lampshade.

What will I learn?

You will learn• How to use different sewing machine functions.

  • How to make different buttonholes
  • Insert a zip
  • Produce and make piping and bias bindings
  • How to measure and calculate fabric quantities.
  • How to match fabrics invisibly
  • Hand sew simple curtain headings
  • Recover old lampshades.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    For your first lesson you need to bring:

    • fabric samples of different weights
    • good quality sewing machine thread to practice with, such as Gutermann

    Learners can join other sewing for home courses to expand their techniques or join other Surrey Adult learning courses to enhance further skills and learning.
