Upholstery - All Abilities

Course intent

Explore the craft of upholstery and learn traditional and modern techniques. You’ll tackle independent projects, whether restoring an heirloom or an upcycling piece. The tutor will provide individual guidance to match your experience. By the end, you'll have hands-on experience with a finished piece(s) to showcase your skills and be able to evaluate your finished work for quality, durability, and aesthetics.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to:

  • Assess items of furniture in order to determine the appropriate type of re-upholstery
  • Identify appropriate filling/stuffing/webbing and its use
  • Identify/evaluate/measure suitable fabric/trimmings/buttons and how to use them
  • Apply colour and design principles
  • Upholster an item of furniture using traditional or modern methods.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for all abilities (but if you are a complete beginner please contact the tutor prior to enrolling – adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk ). Everyone works on their own furniture with guidance from the tutor, but be mindful of the size of the piece you wish to work on. It is advisable to discuss this with your tutor in the first session.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • Item of furniture to be upholstered.
  • Notebook and pen.
  • Upholstery tools you may have.

Please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk before the session with details of your intended project.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further Upholstery and Furniture Restoration, or other Arts & Crafts courses.
