Green Woodworking - Beginners

Course intent

Discover the craft of green woodworking in a fully equipped workshop. You will be taught how to work with unseasoned or ‘green’ timber using traditional methods and make your very own lathe to take home and practise your newly acquired skills. During the course, you will also complete projects to introduce you to a variety of techniques giving you the confidence to work on your own projects.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • How to use the workshop tools safely
  • The importance of health and safety
  • Essential maintenance of tools and machinery
  • How to assemble a pole lathe
  • Basic spindle turning techniques on a pole lathe
  • How to make turned furniture such as a milking stool or woven seat stool
  • How to use a hatchet and drawknife for green wood shaping
  • How to measure, mark out and cut accurately
  • How to plan out work – dimensioning, estimating, tracking down errors, sketching and making diagrams of proposed work
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • The importance of a clean and tidy workshop

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is aimed at beginners with a basic understanding of woodwork, wishing to expand on their knowledge.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • A sketchbook and pen
  • An apron and closed toe shoes

Your tutor will discuss your specific woodwork requirements in the first session.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another course. There are other courses available with SAL including one-day workshops.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
