Patchwork & Quilting - An Introduction to Quilting Part Two [SSK]

Course intent

• A follow up to the introduction to quilting using a domestic sewing machine. You will be introduced to straight lines and gentle curves, and the basics of quilting.

What will I learn?

Layering a quilt, threads, wadding, needles, preparing your machine, straight line quilting, and possibilities for “how to quilt you work” The aim of the course is give students confidence to do their own beautiful quilting.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for all those interested in learning more about Quilting using their sewing machine.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Sewing Machine – don’t forget your power lead and manual. The centres do have sewing machines, but it is better to use your own if you can bring it.

Walking foot if you have one. This is not essential, but you will get a better result if you do bring one. 2m calico, and wadding. – If you would like the tutor to provide suitable trial piece, at extra charge, please email her by 15th July

A piece of your patchwork to practice on – maybe a rejected block or two – with backing and wadding.

Any threads you wish to use, and any sewing machine needles you have.

Curved safety pins, or lots of tacking thread

Marking pens.

Scissors – big and small

A sewing kit may be useful but not essential.

The cost of the course does not include materials. There will be a small charge for any sundries – bobbins, needles, markers etc that you wish to buy from the tutor.

What can I do when I finish the course?

The skills you learn on this course will encourage you to quilt your work; quilts, wall-hangings, cushion covers and more. Your abilities in Patchwork and Quilting can be expanded with extra courses at Surrey Adult Learning in one-day workshops, or by continuing with the weekly lessons.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
