Course intent
You will learn how to sketch and paint in an urban setting. We cover essential basic techniques working from second hand and strategies to work from life. This course will help you to observe the coast in a different way, creating light, atmosphere and depth.
You will learn with Rose Bramwell, who has 30 years’ experience teaching Art. She works as an editorial illustrator and visualisation illustrator for local architects as well as exhibiting in local galleries and art fairs.
What will we cover?
You will build techniques that can be practised both inside and outside (plein air).
You will learn:
- Sketching Techniques
- Shorthand figure techniques
- Explore light and shadow
- How to observe, select and design your composition to engage an audience
Watercolour Painting Techniques:
- Using different brushes and brush techniques
- Exploring Watercolour Sketching Techniques and speed painting
- Using wet in wet and glazing to create contrast and movement
- Mix colour, understand and use a palette for the coastal scene.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience. Every session will involve tailored individual support and targets.
- Paper: Watercolour paper – Cold Press 300 gsm or similar, A4 or A3 size.
- Cartridge Paper Pad or Sketchbook: A4 size and at least 120gsm
- HB, 2B and 4B pencils
- Brushes: Synthetic or synthetic/hair mixtures, Round (with a point): 12/ 14 and a larger mop brush and/ or hake brush (Recommend: Rosemary & Co)
- Paints: Artist’s Quality or Student watercolours in tubes or pans; (Artist’s Colours if you can afford them). Most are usually contained in a beginner’s set or can be bought separately
- Large watercolour palette for mixing paint
- Fine Liner Pens OR a Dipping pen, nib and ink)
What can I do when I finish the course?
To progress onto further urban sketching and watercolour courses and workshops. Rose will also be offering Urban Sketching workshops as part of the summer skills programme.
