Royal History - The Hessian Princesses - granddaughters of Queen Victoria (Lecture)

Course intent

Our series of one-off lectures will give you the opportunity to delve into the details of Royal History with our expert tutor. In this lecture, we will discuss the lives of the Hessian Princesses, granddaughters of Queen Victoria.

What will I learn?

On 1 July 1862, Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s second daughter, married Prince Louis of Hesse. Of their seven children, five were daughters. Princess Marie, the youngest, died aged four. Princess Victoria, the eldest, was to be the grandmother of HRH the late Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Irene was a carrier of the bleeding disease, haemophilia. Most famous of all are Ella, the Grand Duchess Elizabeth of Russia and Alix, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, both of whom were murdered during the Russian Revolution.
