Oil Painting - Summer Food Workshop [SSK]

Course intent

Learn how to capture delicious summer food items using oil paint. Apply your paint confidently to create realistic still life paintings. With step-by-step guidance and support, you will learn how to create paintings bursting with life and colour.

What will I learn?

You will paint from both from life and photographic references sketching out your compositions then painting your food items with confidence. You will learn how to:

  • Sketch out your subjects to create a ground for your oil paintings.
  • Correctly use oil paints and tools
  • Accurately mix colours and tonal values
  • Apply your paint confidently to create realistic still life paintings
  • Build up an oil painting in layers to achieve depth and detail
  • Create compelling compositions for your paintings

    Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This workshop is aimed at beginners and improvers. The workshop will teach the foundation knowledge needed to get you started in oils but will also stretch and challenge those who are already familiar with the medium.

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    Learners need to bring:

  • An apron, suitable clothing
  • A pencil & rubber
  • A set of oil paint to include the colours: Titanium White, Ivory Black, French Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow. Suggested set: https://www.cassart.co.uk/daler-rowney-georgian-oil-introduction-22ml-set-of-10--c/
  • A small assortment of long-handled flat brushes. For example: https://www.cassart.co.uk/Daler-Rowney-Graduate-Brush-Synthetic-Long-Handle-Set-of-5/
  • A flat palette, preferably without dipped sections. An old dinner plate, picture frame, or piece of Perspex will work.
  • A3 pad of oil painting paper (such as: https://www.cassart.co.uk/daler-rowney-georgian-oil-pad-290gsm-12-sheets/ )
  • Kitchen roll/ old cotton rags
  • A clean, empty, leak-proof glass jar with a lid to store solvent in.
  • A zip lock bag or airtight container to transport used rags
  • Masking tape

Your tutor will supply you with some Zest-it® Citrus Free Solvent to use for the day.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners will feel much more confident in their painting skills and understand how oil paints differ from other mediums. You may wish to enrol on an oil painting course at Surrey Adult Learning in the Autumn term to continue your creative journey.
