Course intent
Learn how to create a sculpture of an animal head using clay. Experience and enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment, kneading, working and sculpting the clay. If you are having your piece fired, you will need to arrange to collect it from the Guildford centre when the piece is ready.
What will I learn?

- proportion
- structure
- composition
- creating a textured surface
- hollowing out your sculpture
- finish and preparation of your sculpture for firing at a later date.
The size of the sculpture is limited to maximum height of 25cm.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Beginners and those who practice sculpture or who are artists new to clay modelling but may have some experience in model making, pottery, cake decoration or any other 3d disciplines.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
If you would like to sculpt an animal you know/prefer, please bring a good clear picture of all head angles, especially the front and side. This can be a printout or on a tablet.
A sketchbook/notebook, pencil and pen.
Please wear clothes for messy work, closed toe shoes and bring an apron or oversized shirt for protection.
A packed lunch and drinks, you will have a half hour break during the session.
What can I do when I finish the course?
You may wish to continue with using clay sculpturally in the sculpture termly courses on Wednesday afternoons with this tutor, or on Thursdays modelling with a life model.
