Calligraphy- Celtic Animal Decorations - Beginners & Improvers Workshop

Course intent

Starting with a lovely Celtic script, an early style of writing with some capital and lower-case letters, you will learn to write words and sentences and a short quotation. We will then explore the Celtic decoration which includes little zoomorphic animals that are very quirky and aim to include one or two with our quote.

What will I learn?

You will learn to write the Uncial script, starting with the alphabet and using a broad edged pen

how to rule up and do simple layouts and use colour

explore early examples of the zoomorphic beasts and either trace or design your own to incorporate with your writing.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for beginners and improvers. There will be different levels according to how much experience you have. If you are left-handed you will need different nibs so please contact the tutor on adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk . Please also get in touch if you have any queries.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You need to bring:

• a hard pencil (2H or similar), an HB pencil
• a sharpener
• a ruler
• a permanent ink fine liner in black or brown.
• scissors
• an A3 sketch or layout pad
• a biro and notepad
• old or dark clothes
• reading glasses if you use them

If you already have any calligraphy materials – please bring them with you.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can join longer calligraphy courses to develop your skills and other short workshops with SAL. Your tutor can advise you about further courses of study and about attending local calligraphy groups.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
