Course intent
Discover the wonderful world of water casting and create beautiful forms in silver using a variety of household objects. At the end of the workshop, you will have a series of small cast pieces which can be made into wearable pieces of jewellery.
What will we cover?
You will learn:
- how to heat/melt metal
- the health and safety precautions for melting and casting metal
- how to cast metal in water
- how to design a piece of jewellery around your cast items
- finishing and polishing.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is for improvers. The workshop involves working high temperatures. Confidence with soldering and using heating equipment would be desirable.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- a notebook or sketchbook and pencil to record the processes
- you may want to bring a camera to take photographs of your work as it progresses
- it is essential that you wear strong closed-toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops). An apron and/or wearing old clothes is strongly advised. Long hair will need to be tied back in the jewellery studios
- any scrap silver that you may like to add to your casting project (the tutor will advise on individual items)
- a packed lunch or refreshments
Please contact us before booking if you are pregnant.
What can I do when I finish the course?
We offer a range of jewellery and silverwork classes during the week including evening classes at both Guildford and Woking. Workshops provide a day of learning a technique and how to make a piece of jewellery in a day. We offer enamelling (earrings and a pendant), making a silver brooch, making rings (some with sea glass) and silver chain bracelets.
