Jewellery & Silverwork - Wax Carving Workshop - Improvers

Course intent

Explore the ancient technique of wax carving. You will produce a number of different forms and textures which can be applied to your future designs.

What will we cover?

You will learn:

  • about the different types of jewellers’ wax
  • how to measure, carve and file wax
  • how to apply texture and detail to wax pieces
  • how to finish the wax ready for casting

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for improvers wishing to explore a more sculptural way of working.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    You need to bring:

  • a notebook or sketchbook and pencil to record the processes
  • you may want to bring a camera to take photographs of your work as it progresses
  • it is essential that you wear strong closed-toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops). An apron and/or wearing old clothes is strongly advised. Long hair will need to be tied back in the jewellery studios
  • a packed lunch or refreshments

Please note, this workshop focuses on the technique of wax carving. If you would like to cast your finished wax in metal, your tutor will advise. The cast piece is not included in the costs of this workshop.

What can I do when I finish the course?

We offer a range of jewellery and silverwork classes during the week including evening classes at both Guildford and Woking. Workshops provide a day of learning a technique and how to make a piece of jewellery in a day. We offer enamelling (earrings and a pendant), making a silver brooch, making rings (some with sea glass) and silver chain bracelets.
