History - Ancient Rome: Pompeii Revealed

Course intent

We shall investigate the story of the Roman city of Pompeii from its early days in the 4th century BCE, through to its expansion and development up to 79CE, when it was buried by ash from the exploding volcano Vesuvius. Then centuries later it was slowly brought back to life by successive teams of archaeologists.

What will I learn?

We shall explore:

The techniques used by the archaeologists to excavate and preserve their finds.

The layout of the city in 79CE and what this reveals about Roman town planning.

The key features of Pompeian houses and what they reveal about the daily life of the family.

The public buildings and what they tell us about the lifestyle of this vibrant city; for example in terms of entertainment, local government, commerce and religion.

Numerous amazing wall paintings, mosaics, statues and architecture will all help to reveal what a real Roman city was like.
