Learning at home

Follow these simple rules when you're helping your child learn at home:

  • Chose a time when you and your child can sit undisturbed, with no distractions.
  • Agree how long you are going to spend – a little and often works best. Try five to ten minutes concentrated work – only spend longer if your child wants to
  • Pitch the work at a level your child can succeed at, making it on the easy side if necessary.
  • Be positive and encourage your child. If mistakes are made concentrate on praising the parts that were right.

You can apply these to any tasks you help your child with at home from reading and writing through to maths and other subjects.
